any indication that he thought they were guilty because of their race

otherwise it’s just a narrative. like say, the one at Oberlin college where the students were sure the owner of the bakery went after the thief because he was black and so went on a crusade to ruin his livelihood

Isnt it binary? Charleston shooter for instance. Could we have said he was racist for shooting up a church? I think what showed his racism was the fact of his Facebook posts.
