Proposal: Illinois says no to Trump unless tax returns are released

A bill is being pushed that requires Donald to release five years’ worth of tax returns if he wants to appear on the Illinois 2020 ballot:

It’ll be interesting to see how far this goes.

About as far as the nearest court, if it passes.

No doubt Donald would challenge it immediately.

Should states have the right to decide for themselves what requirements are necessary for their own ballots?

I don’t agree with that bill. I want Trump’s name on the ballot in all 50 states. Then Trump won’t have an excuse on why he lost the popular vote.

Donald will always have an excuse. Remember he whined about a rigged system and threatened to challenge the election results right up until he won.

And then still whined that he didn’t win California or new york

Only requirments to run for president are in the constitution. The bill will be found uncsonstitutional.

No. Constitution spells out the only requirments to be eligible to run for president.

Read Article II again.

That is a federal ballot, not a state office. The Constitution establishes the requirements for the Presidency. They do not include releasing tax returns, standing on one foot, or being an Episcopalian.

  • No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

Where does it say tax returns required to be president?

please and thank you.

They could require that electors provide their tax returns, they cannot demand the President present his tax returns…no more than they can demand that electors only vote for someone who is at least 40.
Read it again.

No. You show us where the feds can overrule how a state runs their own election.

Since when can a state impose a new restriction/condition on a presidential candidate?

Constitution over rides local laws.

Since always. You haven’t proved your point. Try again.

Really?

You really think states can over ride the constitution?

Is there anything in the constitution that protects a candidate from showing their tax returns?

The ONLY requirments to be eligible to be on the ballot:

  • No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

Texas can pass a law no democrats on ballot then…

No, the constitution is pretty clear about what the requirements for the office are.
