He’s really the first president I remember as a kid growing up. I was alive for Nixon & Ford, but too young really to understand politics at that point.
As a GA native, I have kept up with a lot of his work with Habitat for Humanity over the years. Hope they are able to keep him as comfortable as they can. I watched my dad die in hospice, and I will always be thankful for those who work in that field - particularly those who were there for him in his last days.
Sad to hear but you should really look into the hospice scam, whole lot of poor uneducated people being sold that option by scammers. Come to hospice, you can get a wheelchair or some other medical need met, if you just sign away your right to treatment Not saying that is the case here, saying it’s a nationwide epidemic people need to be aware of.
No it’s kind of messed up. In order to get hospice care you have to formally agree your illness will no longer be treated. That’s insane. Why should he have to make such an agreement? For what purpose? How does it benefit the patient?
Because he wanted to be in his own home, in his own bed, with his family. What good does being in a hospital attached to an IV and EKG do a 98 year old? It’s normal to die at 98.
The original hospice was non-profit and made up of a handful of professionals plus many, many volunteers. It’s an excellent organization and I served on the local board for many years. Then the medical community got into hospice for profit. Their profit comes from what is not spent on the patient. This is one arena that profit seekers should stay out of…period.
President Carter may very well have been the finest person to be POTUS in my lifetime but as a President, he was terrible. May he be comfortable for the balance of his life.
I had just happened to come across that article a few weeks ago. Same sort of thing goes on in nursing homes. Suing one right now that dropped my mother and broke her hip which was pretty much the proximate cause of her death. My lawyer advises that if we win a big settlement they will just declare bankruptcy and open under another corporate entity.
I have a rather unique perspective on this as I now have an auto - immune disorder that affects my lungs and heart. It has brought me face to face with death twice in the past 18 months. It’s difficult to imagine until you’ve faced something like this, but there are times when letting go and letting nature take it’s course is a much more preferable option than the alternative.
I’ve actually set up a living will and DNR, both arranged as to keep suffering to a minimum when the time comes.
You should read the article I linked to be aware of the bad actors in that space. I wish you the best health outcome. It’s not impossible to have a good outcome but it’s profitable and being abused by nefarious actors.
