Two great options, don’t know much about Panama but I have friends building a pad in Costa Rica who swear by it.

I have been mulling over Baja as a retirement option which is still very far away for me. But I love Baja and go fairly regularly as it about an hour drive down for me.

A Eurocentric Slav is a Slav who is a European and is indoctrinated in European culture. Just like there are Eurocentric Nordics, Saxons, Germanics and Latins. Just because Slavs have a distinct genetic history, does not make them any less European than the Swedes, French, Germans, or Italians.

By the way, White Russians are European too … Turks are not. Turkey is the mixing pot of east/west cultures.

Why would the property taxes have to go up? Roughly 70% of property taxes go towards public schools and the wealthy typically have fewer children than poor and middleclass.

Property taxes rise with home values, right? They rise irrespective of the monetary needs of the local community/state.

let’s say you own a paid off home that is worth 300k and your property taxes are 3% every year (9k). You are retired and on a fixed income.

Then your city/town courts Google to open an office there and they agree. Google starts sending employees there from California and due to the fact that housing is limited, they start a bidding war on the few properties that are available.

When the dust settles those highly googlers drive up home prices to 600k. Now that homeowner we was paying 9k in property taxes, suddenly must pay 18k in property taxes… get a reverse mortgage just to pay taxes…or move.
