Secretary of State Mike Pompeo didn’t mince words when weighing-in on the US-Russia Nuclear Treaty Tuesday; saying the Trump administration will withdraw from the pact unless Russian President Vladimir Putin fully complies with the strict guidelines.

“Russia is responsible for the demise of the treaty,” Pompeo said at a press conference Tuesday. “Only they can save this treaty. If Russia admits its violations and fully and verifiably comes back into action, we will of course welcome that action.”

The accord was first signed in 1987 in an attempt to ease the ‘Mutually Assured Destruction’ policy deployed during the height of the Cold War. A key component of the pact was an outright ban on the deployment of ground-based, medium-range nuclear weapons.

“There is complete unity around this,” Pompeo said. “We believe this is the right outcome.”

“Russia’s violation of the INF Treaty erodes the foundations of effective arms control and undermines Allied security,” said a statement released by NATO. “This is part of Russia’s broader pattern of behavior that is intended to weaken the overall Euro-Atlantic security architecture.”
