Democrat Andrew Gillum leads GOP candidate Ron DeSantis by six points in recent polls; setting the stage for a Sunshine State showdown between the Bernie-backed progressive and Trump-endorsed conservative.
According to a recent Reuters poll, 50% of Florida voters support Gillum compared to 44% who back DeSantis.
Both candidates are hoping to replace Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who will be leaving office due to state-wide term limit requirements. Scott is currently running for the United States Senate.
The new survey shows Gillum opening a wider lead than initially predicted, with earlier polling showing the race in a statistical dead heat.
