Interesting. IMO, empathy by definition is being able to understand the feelings of another, and that is driven in large part precisely by seeing yourself in another’s circumstances, of being able to imagine how the other is feeling because you can imagine how you yourself would feel. Empathy involves feelings and emotions, not a philosophical abstract.

It goes a long way toward explaining why Trump is such a poor leader - his words and actions demonstrate a personality profile that suffers from an undeveloped ability to understand how anyone else might feel.

Yes I know.

Anyone? Are you sure?

How do you separate emotion from philosophy?

Again, this is mere opinion based on the evidence I’ve seen. I’m not a psychologist, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I’ll hold forth:

Donald is a textbook example of someone with NPD - his ability to engage with others is best expressed in relation to himself - specifically, what others can do for HIM in terms of personal gain, be that material gain or validation of his self worth. He is severely stunted in his ability to empathize with another for THEIR sake alone.

He seems to be empathizing pretty well with about 60 million people.

Is he really?

How would you provide evidence of that?

Sure. How does he benefit personally from fighting for the wall amd all this other stuff?

Why do you think all those people love him?

That’s not empathy.

a) It got him elected President, and as President he gets boatloads of attention
b) They love him because he tells them what they want to hear, thus reinforcing a)

I disagree.

Okay. This was a good conversation, thank you.

Those that impose their bias onto rest of society aren’t capable of overcoming them.

Nice bit of transference there.

Thank you.

Same here. Not that I became more liberal in the process, just more understanding of things that make us all different. Possibly more empathy than I care to have, but maybe I’m just not used to it yet.

I’m not projecting my thoughts, I’m basing it on reality. It’s that reason why I caution people about creating and writing laws etc.

In most cases it is their own bias they’re enforcing.

That literally makes no sense.

Really…is that based on your observation or what you’re preposition to believe?

I don’t have to imagine what you feel like in order to imagine how I would feel in your situation.

Imagining what you feel like sounds more like sympathy to me.

For you…of course it doesn’t. For some…yes.

That’s the very nature of this discussion were having now…isn’t it?

But keep up with your insults to overcome your shortfalls. It is after all human nature to mask their weakness.

I’m no exception…
