The problem with equating cops to Joe Schmoe is that Joe Schmoe has no right to ask the suspect to stop and comply. That is the hole in your comparison.

Stopping and complying is irrelevant to deadly force.

Not a good answer. You jumped over a few steps.

These things cannot be compartmentalized.

Truth is, there are virtually never enough well-trained teams, on site, trained to safely restrain a suspect before he/she can reach for a possible gun.

There are three possible solutions 1.Have adequate, well-trained police to do such sudden restraints safely, or 2. People need to stop having criminal minds and learn to comply to police. 3. Robot armies/police and drones.

The first solution would work the best since the disappearance of criminal minds is a tough goal to reach. It would take lots of instant restraint the moment there was non-compliance. It would not have to mean a police state, it would just mean spending lots of money and clearly defined rules. The third option would be horrible.

Definitely, Police have the right to demand compliance and Joe Schmoe does not.

None of those things have anything to do with when deadly force is authorized to be used.

Here, let’s try this - I would have preferred these cops to not have shot this man, and instead, detained him. In the video it looks like he was staggering and dazed and walking right past them. It seems reasonable to me that they should have tried other options before putting 7 bullets into his body. Do you agree?
