I’m not even sure 7 is enough and it seems like - at least this far - the senate dems agree.
You deliver the minimum to pass it, which is kind of a standard play, right? You negotiate some elements of the bill and promise to deliver enough votes to pass it, while allowing members who would benefit from it to deliver a no vote, just gets you what the house bought themselves - IOW - the title of this thread…
People aren’t interested in the nuances of this legislation, of the potential affect on DACA, and the logistical challenges and funding requirements it creates.
It’s a bill about deporting people who are here illegally and commit crimes…it’s a visceral bill, an embodiment of the immigration issue.
It’s like the whole ‘visit the border’ thing. Biden should have done it. Harris should have done it more. It’s just so obvious.
If you’re in politics, play ■■■■■■■ politics.
I guess there is a down side to alienating the latino vote? Maybe there is a layer to this I am missing?
Or maybe there are fewer layers. I see it as a bill to allow states to intervene if the federal government refuses its responsibility to remove illegal aliens who commit other crimes beyond immigration laws.
I did see that the latest version removes language blaming biden for the death of the name sake, or something like that. which seems to have eased the way for some dems to vote yes.
And who is the CEO of the mom and pop store that just needed an employee who would show up reliably and was willing to work when they were there, so they didn’t ask too many questions when they hired them?
They should have. There is no reason why any business should be hiring illegal immigrants. The fact they know they can get hired is one of the big attractions.
And what happens to that mom & pop business while pop is in prison for hiring the only guy who was interested in the job? What is the cost of that? Your desire to throw people in jail when they pose no physical threat is puzzling.
