As already stated, they only had a 3 year shelf life due the guidance wires. Beyond three years from date of production they became brittle and snapped when fired which causes the missiles to instantly ground themselves and explode.

What we sold them were TOW I’s that had already been replaced largely due to that flaw and the fact that due to the frailty of the guidance wires even when new could not be fired across fences, brush, low trees, or utility wiring for the same reasons.

They absolutely were. The TOW 1 only had a shelf life of 3 years. The Hawks we sold them had been obsolete since the early 70’s. There was no way either were ever going to be a threat to US forces if in the future we got into an armed conflict with them.

Additionally the TOW 1 could not be fired over either standing or running water or during periods of rain/fog because that too would short out their guidance system.
