Official 08/14/18 Primary Discussion

Well, should anyone care to discuss any Topic other than the reality TV presidency, here is.

Here in Wisconsin, we have two races that might have some national interest. First we have a GOP primary to determine who will run against US Senator Tammy Baldwin. That race has gotten quite contentious. There is political newbie Kevin Nicholson versus establishment state politician Leah Vukmir. They are both trying to prove which of them is the Trumpiest.

One of them I believe can beat Baldwin. One I believe can’t. I have no idea which will win.

Do you think Vukmir has the best chance at knocking off Baldwin?

And then there is the Democratic primary to choose which check Democrat will face Scott Walker for the governor’s race. There are 8 running, I have no idea who will win.

I believe 4 of the candidates beat Walker, 2 would be a tossup, 2 cannot win against Walker.

Any other interesting primaries to talk about today?

Yes, sir.

I think that Senator Baldwin will pretty easily win reelection. I don’t think that the Democrats are in danger of losing Wisconsin like they are in danger of losing Florida, Indiana, and North Dakota.

I figured, and agree she has the best shot for sure. It will be interesting to see how the night pans out. I’m especially interested in voter turnout.

I was going to add that I will be interested in what the R vs D turnout numbers will be.

Great minds my dear.

Is WI an open-Primary state?

Lucy actually lives in Wisconsin though. I’m actually surprised there is a chance Baldwin could lose, depending on who faces her in the general.

I do agree with you about Florida, everything I’m hearing is that Nelson is in big trouble. In any other election cycle I’d say Scott will win that race, but he’s running against strong headwinds when it comes to Trump.

I think Vukmir has a good chance at knocking Baldwin out. She would have the full-throated backing off the GOP machine here.

I don’t know if you live here, but the R party has an intense network here, emanating from the SW corner of the state, which produced Walker, Ryan, and Priebus. And in intense network of local AM radio personalities. The major Republican politicians here are on those radio stations multiple times per week, and rarely heard in the rest of the state media outfits.

Um I guess. You don’t have to declare yourself to be one or the other, but you can ask for either ballot. With big primaries in both parties, that won’t be happening much.

That means it is open. I agree with you, the stakes are too high for many people to flip party ballots and try to vote against someone though. I was just asking for my own curiosities sake.

I don’t live in Wisconsin, but I am a political junkie.

Joanne, that’s because of the strong Republican Party “machine” that has been built up here over the years. I describe it a little in my reply to Chris.

Kevin Nicholson would only get half hearted support from that, they’d be butthurt over h beating Leah.

I guess it is one of the states Rs will strongly contest if she wins. I didn’t think it would be, but based on what you are saying here I will defer to you, since it’s your home state.

Yeah well that makes sense. Walker faced 3 elections in four years and won them all, so there must be quite a powerful R machine at play there.

Baldwin must keep a very low profile, she’s one Senator I know very little about.

Isn’t it quite risky though for Leah to run as a Trumpist? I know Trump won the state, but just barely. She’s going to have a bit of trouble distancing herself from that in the general, assuming of course that she wins tomorrow.

There’s a reason we have all Republican Governor, Assembly, Senate, Attorney General, and that Ron Johnson again beat so-called popular Russ Feingold.

For me, the second biggest surprise in 2016 (after Trump’s win of course) was Johnson’s reelection. If I recall he won it rather easily too.

Well, both candidates are doing it, so we’ll see how that plays out. Nicholson is running a TV and radio a showing a recording of Leah Vukmir at some sort of gathering, laughing and gabbing about how awful Donald Trump is, how he’s awful to everybody. This was before he became the nominee, and she changed her tune.

I’m serious. The Republican Party here is a well oiled machine. I can admit to being impressed. I t runs in lockstep with the local AM RW talk radio shows. Ron Johnson quite literally goes on those shows several times per week, for easy questions and slavering compliments.

Paul Ryan, Walker, Vukmir, every other R politician who wants a platform pops onto those shows all the time. It’s pretty slick.
