We have three. Two tuxedo males and a spotted female we rescued. Female turned out to have some digestive abnormality that cost a cool $4k in vet bills to have surgically corrected. Don’t ask, the wife is the cat whisperer. I always had GSDs before meeting her, we’ve been together 43 years all counting so I’m not stirring the pot. We’ve had some great boys, a Manx lived to be 20 before it was time. We had a fat boy I called “Jim’s Boy” that could do a 6’ vertical leap and snatch cat birds in mid air while they buzzed him out on the deck. Cats natural hunting instinct always amazed me. One of the boys we have now used to clean out rat nests when we lived up north. He would kill them and bring them home for our approval.
Here in S Florida they sneak around out on the pool deck chasing lizards now. Retirement home ![]()
We have had 5 dogs. We had a cockapoo named Charlie was 13 when he passed. Wrigley was a Newfoundland Golden retriever mix. When my dad was in hospital for two months and she didnt see him for all that time…she got into a funk. He didnt even live with my mom and dad…but mom would come for dinner every Sunday. She didnt know where Dad was. She was 8 when we lost her. Too soon even though she was a big dog at 105 lbs. When Wrigley got in her funk the vet said get a second dog. So we did. A few weeks later my dad came home…when she saw my dad for the first time she became a puppy again. She missed my dad. So we had Wrigley and a puppy named meg. Meg was a aussie shepard pitty mix, and could jump a 44 inch fence. She is 14 years old now. After Wrigley Meg missed having a big dog to be friends with so we adopted a rescued Great Pyrenese. Another big dog. Meg loved Harry. And showed him the ropes and helped him to know our house was home. HARRY passed this past July and in November we rescued Penny. Meg is on her third dog, and while she is deaf and walks with a limp, she is happy and laying at my feet as I type this.
Dogs are part of the family. Its amazing to watche them grow into a home like we are wstching Penny do. I am raising her as I work from home. Shes my office companion as was Harry our Pyr. They become part of your family your life…and while I know my heart will be broken one day by the loss. I also know we have give our best to them, and in return they just Love.
My 20 something daughter is a dog trainer and volunteers training search and rescue dogs. I assisted on one occassion, where I was the lost human.
It was a cool experience. Those dogs are amazing. Some are trained to find lost humans in lakes…as they are still able to pick up the scent. Incredible animals…far better than humans.
