There is,however, something in the statute that has the requirement that the lie is to influence a person giving testimony to an official proceeding. Lying to the NYTs is not the same thing as lying to an official proceeding…which Trump never tried to influence McGahn to do.

Should the AG be meeting with the husband, who is a former President, of the person she is to make a decision about, 72 hours prior to announcing it? No. Should the individual, the FBI Director chose to head up the case, be fanantically negative about her political opponent whom she is running against to become POTUS? Was he fired?
