Why would someone “deflect” - re not answer someone else’s question directly?

Because to do so would be an embarrassment.

Thus - Smyrna brings up the bit about God “possibly” planting the fake evidence to bring the whole “faith” thing into play. Then, when people want to know if he actually believes that himself, and asks a simple yes or no question, to answer it would be embarrassing (and therefore, clearly, “yes”) and so he deflects.

Now, in what’s been happening here in this thread, why would I deflect?

Anyone who reads the two articles regarding Obama and his comment about the wealthy and taxes knows that he said that he’d be willing to pay more taxes because he would still be rich, and he would like other wealthy people to also agree to pay a few percentage points more in taxes (he did not specify how many) but still be rich.

(We did get off into a sidetrack about the wealthy and charity, rather than taxes, and I guess I may have started that with my simple question to Smyrna about Jesus, but that only happened because instead of getting a simple answer I kept being accused of deflection and didn’t understand why since there was no deflection. )

So, again I deny any deflection in this thread because there was no need to deflect. If Obama had said that and then someone had been able to chime in with a link in which Obama had whined about having to pay too much in taxes, then someone who was dishonest with themselves might have tried to deflect.

However, I don’t do that. I try to be fair and see both sides and present links supporting all statements (tho sometimes I forget and because I still can’t access the edit function, I can’t correct myself in the appropriate thread.)

So…a long-winded post to point out that your accusation of “deflection” is without merit!

You could have said, “Oh. I never knew the full statement from Jesus included that extra part.” You could have welcomed the correction so that you wouldn’t misuse that piece of scripture in the future. But instead you deflected the correction to fossils.

Nope. Neither is “helping” the less fortunate without encouraging them to search for jobs, or look into any voc rehab offered in their states to acquire some marketable skills, if that’s an issue.

People like Obama seek to build up the rhetoric until wealth is forcefully confiscated & redistributed to people who don’t know what to do with it.

Look at Zimbabwe, where the population starved as farms owned by white families for generations were forcefully seized & redistributed to black families who knew nothing about farming.

I don’t know about where you live, but where I live, those who really hate the wealthy, from young college students to elderly, aren’t bery diverse, either.

They’re a pretty homogeneous group, really. The vast majority are white.

No, it was not a deflection, because I have no need to deflect anything. Let me repeat: this thread discusses Obama talking about taxes and him saying that he’d be willing to pay more in taxes.

If someone had provided a link that proved that in the past Obama had whined about having to pay more in taxes, then the necessity to deflect and ignore that inconvenient fact would be seized upon by people who do deflect, rather than those who face facts - even inconvenient ones, head on.
