Progressive gubernatorial hopeful Cynthia Nixon was roundly defeated by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in Thursday’s Democratic primary, with key staffers blaming “extremely high turnout” for their election disaster.
Cuomo easily won the highly-contested race in dramatic fashion, beating Nixon by a margin of 65% to 35%.
“This is likely due to two factors: tens of millions of dollars in advertisements from Andrew Cuomo pushing voters to the polls, and a desire on the part of prime Democratic voters to send a message to [President Donald Trump] for the first time since his election," said a memo from Nixon’s campaign staff.
