History says Trump is following in the footsteps of authoritarians.
The first step was convincing low-info voters that he and America were one-and-the-same and that a slight against him was a slight against them.
Next came labeling the press (and others) as enemies of the people. Only he can tell the truth and only he can fix our ills.
He continues to bad mouth his own administration not because of poor performance but because something unflattering was exposed (see first step). He attacks agencies, individuals, his own appointees, who or whatever doesn’t show the proper respect.
This is a coup.
Venezuela has an election, evil dude win (likely cheated)
person who wasn’t even in the election declares himself President because the evil dude cheated.
America back the dude who declared himself President.
That is a coup.

Definition 2, per Websters: “a brilliant, sudden, and usually highly successful stroke or act She pulled off quite a coup when she snagged the usually reclusive author for an interview.”
It can also mean a coup detat. But if we are going to make it a “pants on fire” based on literal useage then yes…it tied up 2 years of the administration. I say that qualifies as brilliant and successful.
Of course, any reasonable person would know what he meant and how he meant it. It is common usage.
A coup is to install yourself as leadership.
who becomes President if Trump is impeached.
see now the “Russia investigation” would have been a coup if the goal was to install let say Hillary as President.
Investigating possible criminal action isn’t a “Coup”.

It is if the basis for the “investigation” is to politically hinder the effectiveness of the administration instead of real probable cause.
by that definition me getting my niece to let me watch something other then paw-patrol is a coup.
If you read the report you would know the basis of the investigation was possible criminal action.

If you are going to take literal definition of “coup” to make it a “pants on fire” then you might indeed be stuck with that definition. If you are going to take common usage, then everyone knows what Trump meant.

The common usage of the term coup is the illegal seizure of political power.
keyword illegal.

I’m not asking to argue them. My positions are my positions, and anyone applying a label to it doesn’t effect how I feel about them. I’m asking because I’m curious.

So…you think you made quite a coup with that statement?
No, it has a lot of usages and subtleties. Not a “pants on fire:” …just another attack on Trump as one would expect form “Politifact”.
And Trump said it was a “coup”, he did not say it was a “coup detat”.
Politifact lied.
Nah. trump doesn’t know what it means and neither do his low-infos. Words have meaning. Your attempt to redefine “common usage” doesn’t get a pass.

I find that so fascinating.
I thought Bill Weld was going to challenge?
Trump probably sent someone to explain how he’s already got the RNC rigged in his favor this go 'round. When he complains about a rigged democratic primary it’s only because he didn’t think about it first.
Yes the person who screams about his critics committing treason on twitter is using the minor secondary definition of the word.
