Ex-Presidents are typically a pretty exclusive club, possibly only a handful alive at any one time. So the number of guys that have been in the “hot seat” is very small. By keeping them up to speed on world events and some of the behind the scenes intel on what is going on, means the current President might use them as a resource to talk over the a situation and obtain advice.
