The U.S. government has approved up to $4.745 billion in funding for Samsung […] will support Samsung’s $37 billion project to build a two-phase leading-edge fab in Taylor, Texas, an R&D facility adjacent to the fab, and start production of chips on fully depleted silicon-on-insulator (FD-SOI) process technologies
The Biden-Harris administration will also provide $407 million in direct funding to Amkor, a leading outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) company to build a $1.7 billion (down from $2 billion expected originally) advanced packaging facility in Peoria, Arizona.
Texas Instruments has secured up to $1.6 billion in CHIPS Act funding and anticipates $8 billion in tax credits to expand semiconductor manufacturing in Texas and Utah.
About $6.75 billion in total for several semiconductor facilities in the sunbelt.
“With today’s award, the United States will be the only country that has manufacturing fabs from all 5 leading-edge semiconductor companies. The manufacture of leading-edge semiconductors is a critical part of the supply chain for advanced AI and other leading technologies,”
It’s unfortunate that this accomplishment won’t be appreciated for while.
The pandemic chip shortages were just 4 years ago, and now the big 5 are breaking ground on fabs in the United States thanks to Biden’s industrial policy.
The funding is part of a $352.6 million “quick release” package for hurricane recovery efforts and is in addition to $167 million initially provided to the two states for emergency relief.
