Open source is great. You’d be surprised how many innovations have come about with products that are open source simply because somebody who uses it can access the code and make a few changes to put some functionality that wasn’t thought of by commercial programmers. I mess around with virtual pinball software and now a commercial company is talking about implementing a “mod” someone made to take a Kinect from an Xbox and use it for head tracking to render virtual tables in 3D in real-time based on where the user is viewing the table from. A freely available mod for a freely available non commercial program that is…wait for it…open source. Something that never even occurred to the commercial company to come up with.
