When someone purchases a product, should they be able to have access to the tools it takes to maintain and repair that product or should the consumer be forced by law to go back to the manufacturer for repair and maintenance?

The purchase and the terms of the purchase is rightfully between the merchant and the buyer.

That really wasn’t a yes or a no answer.

Currently, some vendors can use the force of law to restrict purchasers of their products, including the US military, from legally having the knowledge and tools necessary to repair that product.

So yes or no.

I use Word 2007 now lol. It works fine and no subscription required. I don’t see any reason to ever change as long as the newer versions can read the documents. I send them all over the world and nobody seems to have any trouble with them.

I have word and excel 2010 on my PC, and keep getting notes that this will not be supported after October 2020, and advised I should switch over to the online version. Not going to happen. I’m really not sure what the security risks are. I basically don’t have those programs open while I’m on the internet anyway.
Anybody know what the risk would be?

A better example would be if you were unable to buy the manuals and parts to service the computer that runs your old software.

The reality is that because of the DMCA, farmers are by law unable to service their own tractors, in some cases the military is unable to service it’s own equipment and the normal end user in a lot of cases doesn’t actually own what they have bought.

Well these are only analogies.

I will just say I have a strong disagreement with modern Intellectual Property laws and doctrine. However, I will avoid “going there” at this time.
