I got Word in 98 on one CD, though admittedly that was the tail end of the nineties. It was at least an hour to install it, I remember that much.

I use Word 2007 now lol. It works fine and no subscription required. I don’t see any reason to ever change as long as the newer versions can read the documents. I send them all over the world and nobody seems to have any trouble with them.

Currently, some vendors can use the force of law to restrict purchasers of their products, including the US military, from legally having the knowledge and tools necessary to repair that product.

I have word and excel 2010 on my PC, and keep getting notes that this will not be supported after October 2020, and advised I should switch over to the online version. Not going to happen. I’m really not sure what the security risks are. I basically don’t have those programs open while I’m on the internet anyway.

A better example would be if you were unable to buy the manuals and parts to service the computer that runs your old software.

It has been a long long time since it has been worthwhile to open a computer to service it. I haven’t looked inside a computer case in ages.

I run mostly open source software on my private computers and the company provides my work computers and work software. The IT guys see to all that crap.

OpenOffice should meet whatever office software needs you might have. Free and opensource.
