The New York City Council passed a resolution to “abolish” the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency this week; setting the stage for a high-stakes showdown with the Trump administration over the region’s ‘Sanctuary City’ status.
Councilwoman Helen Rosenthal introduced the legislation Wednesday, saying ICE was “unable” to fulfill its duties without “violating due process.”
“ICE, under the direction of President [Donald] Trump, has demonstrated an inability to fulfil [sic] its duties without violating due process, human rights, transparency, public accountability, or an adherence to domestic and international law,” the resolution states.
“[The United States] does not need an opaque and rogue agency operating in our communities, dehumanizing our neighbors, and acting without consequence,” adds the proposal.
The comments echo similar statements from NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio, who called for the removal of the agency earlier this year after claiming it was incompatible with “American values.”
