I already did. My reply is the same.
So in 5 minutes (at any time) he could walk in and sign something opening the govnerment?
Where does the post say anything about opening in 5 minutes?
Feeling a bit overly literal today?
Poster said he could open the government “at ANY TIME”.
No he can’t. he doesn’t have a bill sitting on his desk waiting for a signature.
Do you get it now?
Yeah. I get how overly literal you’re taking his statement.
Fact of the matter is, it would only take Trump’s word to get the government open again. That’s all that’s trying to be said.
There cannot be a deal until the president stops holding hostages. Reopen the government now so that we can debate further border security measures. Hostage taking should not be rewarded.
Uh uh. Dems played that trick before: give us the money to open the government then we’ll negotiate border security.
No, once they got the money to keep government open they still refused to negotiate on the wall.
Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.
PhillyGuy
When did that happen before?
Didn’t he run on the same thing?
The Senate is required to vote on it wish only a three vote margin.
I can see that you approve of using American lives as a bargaining chip. I feel this is inappropriate and morally wrong.
We can negotiate on the wall after people’s lives are not being disrupted. Perhaps Republicans can offer something the Democrats want in exchange for more physical security on the southern border. Reopening the government is not a concession on behalf of the Republicans.
I have no doubt DEMs will do everything in their power to deny Trump his wall. That is what this is really about. The question then becomes how voters react come 2020.
2018 was about moderating voices in swing districts. What voters failed to realize is that freshman moderates have zero power with a radical speaker in control. I’m wondering if those swing voters might do it a little differently in 2020?
Dems will never negotiate the wall. They’ve already made that abundantly clear.
They were willing to give Donald Trump $25b for a wall in August.
This DEM is willing to let the voters decide in 2020… 34 senate seat up for election… 22 held by the GOP today…
They voted to a wall last year in exchange for path to citizenship for DACA recipients.
Trump bailed on the deal.
You can understand why’d they be a bit gunshy.
DEMs keep trying to make that silly claim. It is a talking point. There was never to be $25 billion for a wall, that would have been worth the paper it was written on. The $25 billion was a sum total, with yearly installments in each new budget year - subject to the whim of whoever was in control of Congress. In exchange Trump would have made DACA permanent.
So here we are in the first year of that supposed deal, looking for the next installment with Pelosi in charge. Guess what? No funding this year, but DEMs were grateful for the permanent DACA.
That $25 billion is a tired old talking point. You really should give it a rest.
Well that’s mighty nice of you, given that you really have no say.
I’ve demonstrated that Democrats are willing to negotiate on additional physical security for the border. Republicans are going to have to offer the Democrats something they want if there’s going be a compromise. You can’t just say “give me what I want or I’m going make the lives of a million Americans suffer.” Those American lives are not a bargaining chip that you can use to get what you want. It’s vulgar that Republicans are treating them that way.
You’ve demonstrated no such thing???
What are you talking about? No deal was reached. There’s no funding because Trump didn’t agree to allow a path to citizenship for DACA recipients.
And furthermore, your point of contention is a fabrication. The deal Dems voted for was $2.5 billion a year for 10 years. Any continuing resolution would have continued the funding. Trump can’t get a lump sum, he can’t possibly spend that much money in a year and he never asked for such. Finally, we know this isn’t why Trump rejected the deal, because the Grassley bill which Trump did support contained the exact same $2.5 billion a year for 10 year stipulation.
Finally (for real this time), until DACA recipients become citizens (a process that takes 5 years or more) their legal status can be revoked legislatively, which means that the final criticism too is false.
