This is going to be a bit of a ramble, but if you follow me to the end it makes sense.

Ms Griner plays basketball in Russia for one reason: NBA players make more than 100 times more money than WNBA players make. So to make ends meet, WNBA players play overseas to supplement their income.

So, I blame the NBA Billionaire Boys club for not doing more to close this wage gap, which has resulted in Ms Griner traveling to Russia, and getting caught with a JUUL pod she forgot to remove from her luggage.

Since they are at fault, I think it’s only fair that one of them trade places with Ms Griner, and serve her sentence for her. Their poster child, Mark Cuban would be perfect for this since he’s all about social justice.

Pres. Biden needs to offer up Mr Cuban to take her place, and free her.

Ok but how many first round picks can we get for one of them?

They get paid less because feminists just run their mouths instead of going to or watching womens sports.

Alternatively - they get paid less cause their product sucks.

Not something a feminist could or would say so they should still be supporting them.

This.

I can understand expecting equal pay for equal production. Your average female CPA is as good as your average male CPA. Each should get paid the same for filing equivalent tax returns for a client.

But the product produced by the NBA is in high demand. TV revenues, merchandising, ticket sales, endorsement value … The best NBA players get the best salary for that. The interest in WNBA simply does not generate revenue to warrant NBA-level salaries. Sorry, but that’s just the economic reality of the matter.

For that matter, even the level of play from the Harlem Globetrotters (which far exceeds WNBA level) doesn’t generate NBA-level salaries. It’s entertaining. It’s exciting. But it’s still not the NBA.

But that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be interested in seeing the USA trade Mark Cuban for Greiner.

The funny/sad part is that up until relatively recently nba players were severely underpaid in relationship to their value. It’s only in the past decade or so and arguably only the past 5 years that they started getting paid their worth to the team.

This may change now that super teams are dying

But anyway i agree with you

Not only that but they’re subsidized by NBA. Would not survive on their own.

Thus they are overpaid as it is.

  1. There is no crisis. A drug smuggler is in prison.
  2. Griner is worth $5M, what ends is she trying to make meet?

That’s exactly what it is.

The NBA makes 8 billion in revenue every year. The WNBA barely makes 60 million.

Of course NBA players will be payed more than WNBA players. It’s simple economics.

Can’t say I’m crying about salaries like this.

How many sports fans pay to see women playing basketball? Probably not as many as, say, to see major teams like the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets play:

Men and women aren’t equal. They don’t draw equal sized crowds and therefore shouldn’t be paid equally.

Ms. Griner didn’t bother to learn Russian laws before leaving, so she needs to learn their language now, serve her time and come home.

If any of us had smuggled weed into Russia, no Democrat would care to lift a finger to help.

I’m not much of a sports fan, so some of this is lost on me.

Isn’t one’s interest in a sports team driven by their relative skill/success measured against others in their league?

IOW, don’t you root for XYZ team to win, regardless of other team’s capabilities in other leagues?

I’m not expressing myself clearly…

Let me try this -

Do you watch the NBA to root for your team to win, or do you watch the NBA to see the pinnacle of basketball talent in action?

Know what I mean?

I guess it’s both?

Ultimately, it really is as simple as this.

Bingo.

I don’t think I agree out of this context. In this context, I agree and the current situation is fair, which is far more important than mythological “equal”.

More accurately I would say men and women are different. Equal is meaningless.

Bingo.

i.e. local run leagues with 40+ year old weekend warriors can be hella fun and competitive, but not many would spend money to see them, much less buy merch, etc…

You are conflating “one’s interest” with overall interest.

Very few people (relatively) care about WNBA, so even fewer have an interest in a particular team.

And just because someone is a sports fan doesn’t mean he is a fan of every sport. And even if he is a fan of a particular sport, it doesn’t mean he has a favorite team (or player) in that sport.
