Umm I never said no virus has been eradicated. We managed to do it twice, smallpox in humans and rinderpest in ruminants.

What did you mean by impossible then?

That’s not a goalpost move. The time element is fundamental to controlling this virus. Will you find it acceptable if it takes 180 years to effectively eradicate COVID as a threat to humanity?

It is also worth noting that the smallpox virus has not been eradicated. It has been contained, but as more and more people are no longer inculcated, if it breaks free (it remains dormant but as virulent as ever in the corpses of many long dead victims) it could quickly again become the scourge it once was.

The smallpox virus has not been eradicated. I don’t know about rinderpest … but I doubt it.

Smallpox exists only in labs. It is no longer in the wild.

Polio is almost gone… but anti vaxxers keep on stymying the efforts.

That is not true. Smallpox virus has been found still viable in the corpses of the dead right here in the State of Alaska.

And there are new cases of Polio nearly every year which have absolutely nothing to do with "anti-vaxxers.

Long frozen dead people are not the most active of vectors.

it does… the global polio vaccination program has seen success in it’s grasp several times only to have it fail.

It is still a potential source of infection outside of the lab. And with frozen bodies oozing out of the thawing permafrost, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility. The virus is still with us whether you fear it or not.

None of which had to do with anti-vaxxers.

That’s all well and good, but in the context of the discussion, it was not brought up until his point was refuted. Therefore, it is a goal post move.

No it’s not. You just didn’t like the time element being brought into it, when in fact, time is an essential … even inescapable … element when dealing with a vaccine to fight a virus.

i don’t disagree.

this is a semantic argument.

If time is a concern, say it up front. Other wise you are moving the goal post.

No it’s not. (You really ought to review the meaning of that word … it doesn’t mean what you seem to think it does.) And you don’t get to set the rules for the order of discussion. Time is always an element of any situation. It’s ever existing … it never stops … it doesn’t have to be mentioned up front to be a part of a discussion.

I meant for this type of virus, obviously.

Me: there has never been someone who threw more than 5700 strike outs.

You: Nolan Ryan.

Me: He played in the 70-90’s.

Moving the goal posts?

You said respiratory virus.

Small pox is a respiratory virus.

In what way is the coronavirus specifically different?

Obviously didn’t read the thread. A. only infected humans B. vaccine stopped infection probably a c and a d as well but it’s late and I don’t care that much. Bottom line, we stopped two and it took 182 years to stop the human one. Eradicating covid is nonsense, something only the stupidity of communist China should be embracing because it’s consistent with their utter indifference to their ctizens suffering.

Nope. It’s just off point.

Why are you so desperate to convince me that @zantax moved the goalposts?

I have an obscure acronym, plf
