If they tell the teacher. The guidance appears to be to respect the chosen pronouns of the student.

I m actually going to find some common ground with you in this context…
Parents need to be more active. Chicago as I understand it is a city with lots of broken families, fatherless kids. That’s part of the reason the murder rate is so high there.
If a kid starts asking to be called something that he or she is not at school don’t you think parents need to know about that? I do…somewhere at the top of this thread the teachers were being told to leave parents out if this discussion…I forget the exact wording but no…that’s wrong.

Your going to flip out at this…
I spent several years as a substitute teacher. That’s one person in a classroom with multiple kids.
It’s the teachers job to teach…not to try to remember who’s using which preferred pronouns today. Johnny is a he, Susie is a she…I can’t see anything but distraction and time wasted in class coming from boys wanting to be referred to as girls or vice versa.
There’s nothing wrong with recognizing there are two sexes.

This country is what, 25th in the world or something like that in math and science? I posted some disturbing statistics about how poorly Chicago schools are doing above.
Our education system has way more important things to worry about than preferred pronouns.

No that is not what they were told to “keep” from parents.

And you don’t own your children.

No idea what that is supposed to mean.

The equivalent of telling a child it is okay to get in the van with the man offering candy. He’s just misunderstood and really a nice guy.

School choice may become an even hotter topic than it currently is. When schools lose funding per student, they tend to wake up not woke up.

I have the upmost respect for teachers, as both of my parents were educators. And I agree that educators have a hard enough job already before adding more distractions into a classroom. But gender fluidity is a thing now and it’s something schools have to address. In this case, it appears teachers are being asked to respect the chosen pronouns of their students. As with any new thing, it might be a distraction in some cases, but otherwise, teachers will have to adapt.
Finally, we’re talking mainly about gender here, not sex.

It doesn’t seem like the school system is worried. They are just respecting pronouns and moving on.

I simply reject the premise that gender is a self defined identity. Gender denotes one’s contribution and the part one plays in the reproduction of the species. That function is an unalterable signature of that specific gender, unable to be possessed by the opposite gender. The idea that one can determine their own gender simply by refusing to accept the facts of their DNA and physical body is also a mere false construct. And adaption of societal gender roles and dress norms of the moment does not determine one’s gender. Surgery and hormone therapy can not confer a different gender than that determined by one’s DNA. Thus when it comes to gender, I think does not mean therefore I am. This whole constructed exercise in gender (adjective, not noun) identity is simply meant to give false validation to the belief that one determines their own gender, rather than it being predetermined by the genetic contribution of their male parent. So you can make up all the long winded, dramatic, emotional, philosophical, pseudo-scientific arguments, built on the false premise of self determined gender identity, you can. But they will always crash upon the unalterable biological physical world signatures that actually determine gender.

The question, again, is this: can you show that the form of genitalia is causative of the experience of identity?

You are stuck, like a broken record, in the land of self identity. This is just another false premise in an attempt to claim a biological reality, of the physical world, is altered by a mere unsupported belief that exists only in the mind of an individual. Just because you think something in your mind does not make it a fact in the real world.
I make it a habit not to suffer fools, so I won’t waste time or blood sugar on your patently false premise.

Then how does the teacher “stay out of it”?
