The proposals are looking like a Putin-style media censorship will have formal recognition if congress moves this proposal forward. Putin-supporting oligarchs who control the Russian media allow create a state-controlled media while maintaining a façade of private ownership. Russian media that fails to comply with censorship is harassed by the government and its oligarch allies. Russia still nominally has freedom of speech, but the few remaining free media outlets are forced into exile.

As the old Russian proverb goes, there is no truth in news and no news in truth.
