I don’t care. Repeal the 17th!

Right now 29 states have republican controlled senate.

Actually, the approval of both Houses of the Legislature was needed to elect a Senator.

Which is why there were frequent vacancies before the 17th, because two Houses could not agree on one candidate, particularly if there was split partisan control.

Part of the reason why the 17th Amendment was passed.

Also… there was some pretty rampant corruption around outright buying a Senate seat in Montana

Then they evidently (and voluntarily) cut THEMSELVES out of the compact by ratifying the 17th Amendment. 41 of the 48 then existing States ratified the amendment. Only one ultimately rejected it (Utah). The six States that did not ratify, may either have opposed the amendment or may simply have not bothered due to its ratification being complete.

The States VOLUNTARILY gave up that power.

With 36 states having ratified the Seventeenth Amendment, it was certified by Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan on May 31, 1913, as part of the Constitution. The amendment has subsequently been ratified by:

Alabama: April 11, 2002
Delaware: July 1, 2010 (after rejecting the amendment on March 18, 1913)
Maryland: April 1, 2012
Rhode Island: June 20, 2014

The Utah legislature rejected the amendment on February 26, 1913. No action on the amendment has been completed by Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina, Virginia, Alaska or Hawaii. Alaska and Hawaii were not yet states at the time of the amendment’s proposal, and have never taken any official action to support or oppose the amendment since achieving statehood.

Looks like it is. I had a TIA awhile back and my daughter says I did the same thing.

I have a good friend about Mitch’s age who had several of these “freeze-ups.” Her doctor (a neurologist) says they are neurological episodes, not a stroke. Her’s seem to be brought on by stress, which could explain Mitch’s as well. However, that these are occurring since his head injury last spring, who knows.

Just last Friday, one of my coffee companions had a similar experience except he simply suddenly (mid sentence) could not form words. He could move and seemed to understand what we said to him, but when given the stroke protocol, he could not smile so we assumed a stroke and called 911. Before the EMTs got there, his speech recovered, but he seemed confused. After giving him a quick check over, the EMTs took him to the ER for a more thorough check, but still assuming a stoke. But when we spoke to him Monday (on the phone) he said the doctors could find no evidence of a stoke on the MRI. Apparently, the brain can just go on the fritz for no apparent reason.
