Too long? The capsule collapsed in a few milliseconds. It would have made no difference if they had called for help at next moment at the end of that transcript or had never called at all. The only hope those people had was if the loss of communications was their only serious problem and that they still had positive buoyancy (as last reported.) The crew topside knew that even in the best-case scenario, it would take hours for the sub to reach the surface. Calling for help was not a priority.

And I don’t get your cry wolf analogy. There was no false alarm.
