As soon as it was reported they were dead one knowledgeable submarine guy said “They are not even mush”.

I’m not so sure about that. Remember, this isn’t metal, it’s carbon fiber. They’re dead alright, but maybe not the way people think they died.

Sure, but I would imagine a steel hull imploding would do a lot more damage to a body than a carbon fiber hull shattering around you. Steel would obliterate the bodies. But with CF it may have mainly been the water pressure.

Without seeing pictures of the wreckage or reading a detailed description of it we can only speculate, but given that the titanium nose piece was recovered intact some distance from the main debris and adding the hints from the recording that the failure started in tail pod, I’m guessing that it was like rolling up a toothpaste tube very quickly. The cylindrical shape of the tube is structurally dependent on the end sections. If the aft one was compromised and separated from the tube the tube would collapse.

13 trips to the bottom out of over 100 total the sub made and aborted over 90 is not best odds.
The overwhelming enthusiasm about seeing Titanic in real life clouded their common sense.
I only feel sorry for the young 19 year old man and his mother who lost her son to such an unnecessary cause.

I no longer believe the leaked transcript is real. I am close to 100% on that.

It has been said that the Polar Prince, or whatever the mother ship was called didn’t raise the alarm immediately after they lost connection to the Titan. It was many hours before they did so. This was attributed to this happening before with no ill results.

But if you read the transcript, it clearly shows a serious situation going on. They would never have waited that long to call for help. They would have immediately.

Not raising the alarm goes in direct contrast to the transcript. Like crying wolf, after a while you ignore it. Unless there’s a good reason not to ignore it, which would be what took place in the transcript.

But I do see your point. What could they do but wait and see if they reestablish contact. Like they’ve done in the past. It just seemed like they waited a bit too long under those circumstances.

The only hope those people had was if the loss of communications was their only serious problem and that they still had positive buoyancy (as last reported.) The crew topside knew that even in the best-case scenario, it would take hours for the sub to reach the surface. Calling for help was not a priority.

I’d give him the benefit of a doubt if he agreed to have his vessel certifyed/properly examined.
He refused, he admited that he cut few corners and that in my mind is recless disregard for safety no matter how rushed, no pun intended, is he to reach his goal.

I do get your point. But there were false alarms. They’ve lost communication in the past only to reestablish it later on. Sometimes several hours later.

Or at least get non destructive testing on the sub after multiple dives. That’s the least he could do. But he thought he knew better.

I do get your point. But there were false alarms. They’ve lost communication in the past only to reestablish it later on. Sometimes several hours later.

Those earlier communication failure incidents do not constitute false alarms, they are simply what happened. A false alarm would be that the sub crew reported issues when none existed. But either way, whether the loss of communications was equipment failure or the results of implosion, there was absolutely nothing anyone on the surface could do about it except wait (and hope) that they popped to the surface. When, after waiting the amount of time that they estimated it would take for them to come up and they saw nothing, that was the appropriate time to call for help to find them on the surface. However, finding them stranded on the bottom and retrieving them alive, was never a realistic expectation.
