This is what I pieced together just now. Something you probably already did. The sub was taking on water in the tail early on. Which is why they were descending too fast. Obviously the real time monitoring system wasn’t designed to detect that, just noise in the structure.

Once they reached a depth that put strain on the hull, the RTM went off. But when they tried to ascend, the water weight countered. Too much had already gotten in. Had they detected the leak early on, maybe they would have had better luck. But at that depth, with the great pressure all around them, the added water was just too much.
