I have another question regarding this. Everyone says Titan was made from carbon fiber and titanium. But what was the carbon fiber wrapped around? It had to be wrapped around something.

It was wrapped around a cylindrical form … multiple layers of carbon fiber fabric epoxied together (with what compound, I don’t know) until it was about 5-inches (I believe) thick. The form was not part of the structure.

So what do they do, pull that cylindrical form out after heating it? I guess they’d use some metal that easily expands and then contracts? Otherwise I don’t know how they’d do that.

I know. I could be completely wrong here, but this would be my guess. Use an aluminum or steel tube to wrap the carbon fiber around. Then when they super heat it in the oven, the aluminum expands. When it cools down, the aluminum/steel retracts but the carbon fiber does not. It has to be something along those lines. Or else how do you remove the tube?

Probably like laying up a fiberglass boat - use something like plastic sheeting over the core to keep the resin from sticking.

Or it could be done with a retractable form that is expanded to wrap the fiber and then retracted to remove it. The inside wrap would not have any epoxy on it.

I actually think the idea Rush had was a good one. Just needs more testing. Maybe a thicker than 5 inch hull, and a diamond pattern instead of the straight pattern they used. Also, maybe a quicker way to ascend.

The video that you posted speculates that water penetrated a dry area in the tail section that slowed the assent. Coming back to the surface was about the only part of the design that had multiple redundancy.

This is what I pieced together just now. Something you probably already did. The sub was taking on water in the tail early on. Which is why they were descending too fast. Obviously the real time monitoring system wasn’t designed to detect that, just noise in the structure.

Once they reached a depth that put strain on the hull, the RTM went off. But when they tried to ascend, the water weight countered. Too much had already gotten in. Had they detected the leak early on, maybe they would have had better luck. But at that depth, with the great pressure all around them, the added water was just too much.

Sure, but I would imagine a steel hull imploding would do a lot more damage to a body than a carbon fiber hull shattering around you. Steel would obliterate the bodies. But with CF it may have mainly been the water pressure.

Without seeing pictures of the wreckage or reading a detailed description of it we can only speculate, but given that the titanium nose piece was recovered intact some distance from the main debris and adding the hints from the recording that the failure started in tail pod, I’m guessing that it was like rolling up a toothpaste tube very quickly. The cylindrical shape of the tube is structurally dependent on the end sections. If the aft one was compromised and separated from the tube the tube would collapse.

13 trips to the bottom out of over 100 total the sub made and aborted over 90 is not best odds.
The overwhelming enthusiasm about seeing Titanic in real life clouded their common sense.
I only feel sorry for the young 19 year old man and his mother who lost her son to such an unnecessary cause.
