As probably the only liberal on these forums who supports gun rights, and tends to stay away from gun debate threads I’ll say this.

I understand the frustration. I saw a video of what these kids went through. Hearing the fear in their voices, I cried.

I shouldn’t have brought up different kinds of guns, or how fun they can be. Not in a thread about children losing their lives due to a mass shooting. I apologize for that, this isn’t the time.

But what can be done about mass shootings? More gun regulations? I haven’t seen reasonable regulations that would have stopped this shooting. Assault weapons bans? Wouldn’t have helped in this case, and banning a weapon on looks is just ineffective and ridiculous.

All that’s left that can be done with gun regulation is an outright ban. That’s not happening, and fundamentally disagree with a gun ban. I believe the right to self defense, is a human right. Honestly, whenever the left brings up guns, and why people shouldn’t have them. It feels like liberal, ivory tower, elitism. “You don’t need guns for self defense, that’s what police are for!” Conservatives are right, police can no be relied on for self defense. Not when danger is immediate, and help is minutes away.

As liberals we should be looking at root cause mitigation. What is the cause for gun violence, and mass shootings? Address those issues. When it comes to mass shootings, I know some disagree, like Sneaky, but I believe mental illness is the root cause here.

We need better mental illness awareness in our schools, better counseling in our schools, affordable mental health for families, and a society that doesn’t stigmatizes mental illness.

Unfortunately, since Columbine, mass shootings like this are here to stay. The would be shooters idolize the Columbine shooters, and there is nothing that can be done, outside of addressing mental health.

It is absolutely false. In the 50s and 60s, far more households contained guns than do so today. Gun safes were rare. Most people kept their guns in a closet, or a glass fronted gun display cabinet that may or may not have had a lock on it that could be picked with a bobby pin, if the key was not kept atop the case. Guns, including semi-automatic hand guns, could be purchased by anyone with the money, regardless of age, through the US Mail. Guns could be purchased at gun shops without even presenting an ID, let alone. (I bought my first gun at an outdoor sporting goods store in 1963, at the age of 16 without having an ID or even having to give my name.)

In short, you don’t have any idea what you’re talking about.

That epitomizes your ignorance. The defense is of our Right, not guns.

Great post!!!

I will say this, it is almost always easier to treat the symptoms and hope for recovery. It is much harder to address the core disease. First one has to acknowledge the core issues, and until they are identified and addressed, more “medicine” will do nothing.

It isn’t out of ignorance, it is intentional to try to distract the sheep. Just like the “you can have certain firearms for hunting” line.

Interested in both your opinions. Did these parents fail this child by allowing him access to firearm?

Notnsotung?

If that (assuming that you meant something to do with negligence) were the case, these parents would not be charged with manslaughter. And before you respond with, but that’s the exception, the law has been in effect for many years. Every parent of every kid who shoots someone does not break this law. In fact, most don’t.

And now you’d be wise to pay it heed.

Not shooting…

How did you not get this?

Congratulations. Being aware of your problem is the first step in controlling it. So can we presume now that we won’t be seeing any gun fetish talk?

Access to guns for kids has never been more difficult. My access to guns was effectively unfettered when I was a kid, so I can say with complete confidence, more or fewer guns has nothing to do with it.

Don’t you think your upbringing had a lot to do with your access to guns?

Correct. Shall not be infringed. Why do you feel the number of guns is the problem?

Yes, you are. You had that country. And you screwed it up. But you know what? That country had other problems.

No, they failed by not raising the child to understand he didn’t need access to a gun.

I agree, with the caveat that it didn’t begin with Columbine.

So, the question will be are they culpable for their failing.

Probably, the community wants revenge.

Shouldn’t they though Sneak? These parents and the school failed in epic fashion. Four kids lost their lives because of it.

There are more commonalities in these cases than guns or even “mental health”.

Gaming for example. Do you ever see me calling for bans on games? Or “reasonable, common sense game regulations”?
