Like I said, you don’t want more people to vote.

If you had read all my responses in this thread and in this foeum over time you would know that isn’t true.

You are imposing your sense of the value of automatic registration on me and using it to beat me over the head with it…nothing more.

It is true because your stated reasons make no sense.

Why don’t you want lazy people to vote? They could care deeply about politics and be very well informed yet be too lazy to register.

JJ would you support the change the day of the election to a Saturday?

So you actually believe and have proof that being crazy makes you a genius? I’m sure everyone here would love to see that! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Of course you have. You spent considerable time and effort claiming that you are not a liberal in spite of your strong advocacy for liberal positions and stating clearly that you know of no American politicians who are to your left. You are the personification of a liberal.

How easy is it in Texas?

It is the epitome of government violating free will. Such an action by government doesn’t even allow you the opportunity to act freely even to register on your own. And what does it accomplish? How is the functionality of voting improved? As I see it, all it really accomplishes is to reduce the percentage of registered voters who actually vote.

So you don’t believe that people who are automatically registered will vote? And still doesn’t violate free will.

Why do you think that a higher voter turn out would have reversed the outcome of the election?

The concept of 90-95% of the eligible voters voting sounds good, but in reality it is full of pit falls. Most people who do not vote either are too apathetic to even know what they would be voting for (or against) or do not like any of the choices on the ballot. IMO, the privilege of voting comes with the responsibility to inform oneself of the issues and of the political philosophy and integrity of the candidates. The only thing worse than not voting is to cast an ignorant vote. Every uninformed vote cast has the potential to cancel an informed vote.

Whenever I am asked about my opinion about low voter turn out, I joke that the ideal voter turn out is one … me.

I don’t really believe your joking.

Automatic registration will not increase voter turn out.

Isaac Asimov had a nice short story with that as the plot.

You might be right but there are no drawbacks to trying.

I’ve followed this thread off and on. Two obvious conclusions: (1) No reason why teachers shouldn’t help kids learn the registration process, and (2) No reason why we don’t have automatic registration.

That’s almost an oxymoron. Lazy people tend to not put in any effort to educate themselves on the issues and the candidates. Do you want your well informed and reasoned vote canceled out by someone who votes on a whim?

Gotta love Asimov. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve read the Foundation Trilogy. May favorite little novel is The End of Eternity.

Voter registration rolls and the data therein are used for more than just eligibility to vote.
