16 people were injured with 5 in critical condition after a mass shooting in a Brooklyn subway station:

NYPD Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said the incident occurred around 0830 ET on the Manhattan-bound N-train when “an individual on that train donned what appeared to be a gas mask. He then took a canister out of his bag and opened it. The train at that time began to fill with smoke.”

Sewell said the suspect then “opened fire, striking multiple people on the subway and in the platform.”

Sewell proceeded to recount the timeline of the attack, saying the suspect has been reported as “a male black, approximately 5 feet, 5 inches tall with a heavy build. He was wearing a green construction-type vest and a hooded sweatshirt . . ."
. . .“this is not being investigated as an act of terrorism at this time.” MSN

Wearing a gas mask while throwing a smoke grenade into crowded subway station and then opening fire certainly sounds like a terrorist attack to me.

Why are the police discounting terrorism as a likely motive?

So in this case we SHOULDN’T wait until more info comes out before we draw up conclusions?

I consider it an act of terrorism.

The question is about investigations, not drawing conclusions. Of course, refusing to investigate means that it may be impossible to ever get to the right conclusion.

The FBI has repeatedly said that white supremacists are the greatest terrorist threat.

Would the NYPD be as quick to dismiss terrorism if the description of the suspect was consistent with the FBI’s narrative?

The NYPD doesn’t base their investigations on what they say at press conferences.

Why is the word “terrorism” such a fetish for you guys?

The police could have said “no comment” about any questions about terrorism.

Instead they chose to say they were not investigating that possibility.

Is this going to be one of those “Just Asking Questions” thread that becomes circular?

They didn’t say anything about what they were investigating.

Do ya really think the NYPD, FBI and who knows what else agencies are not gonna thoroughly investigate this?

It already is.

He doesn’t “think” anything. He’s just asking innocent questions.

And round and round we go.

Governments use terrorism as a pretext to end civil rights.

Using race or ethnic background as the basis for determining what constitutes terrorism is dangerous path to follow.

Then why are you so upset that the NYPD don’t think it’s terrorism?

You see they already know it is a black guy… so the fact that they have not yet publicly stated that it is terrorism makes white people look bad… or something.

My neighborhood is a crime scene that is swarming with law enforcement… but they didn’t say the T word yet so they aren’t taking this as seriously as they could… or something.

No one appears to be doing that, aside from you.

We know who the culprit is here:

NATO.

So why wouldn’t they take the opportunity to claim this incident is terrorism and use it as a pretext to curtail civil rights?

I’d guess with all of the cameras in the subways and around NYC, this shooting was captured on film?

My thoughts too.

There was a time when investigations ran their course without every detail being immediately revealed in press conferences. Or at least the expectation that details would be revealed.

I think it’s idiocy that so much is revealed in press conferences. Police info. Military info. I suspect a lot of it is not true. What extent that is, I can only guess.

It’s also important to note that they didn’t say they they won’t investigate it as an act of terrorism. They said, . . .“this is not being investigated as an act of terrorism at this time.”

The rush for scoops by the media demands answers that often cannot be answered at the time. The blood isn’t even mopped up on the train seats. Nobody can give details about the motives of the shooter.

Not sure who “you guys” are. Lots of people are tossing around that word, including the media.

But I do agree that “terrorism” is far too easily used, to the point that it almost has diluted its actual meaning.

Nah but apparently the guy using an Arizona Uhaul was.
