Maryland Gerrymandering

I hope something actually changes in Maryland, but I’m not holding my breath. Changes have already been made in other states.

No democrats are going to be removed over this like republicans were in PA.

I brought it up on the old board years ago when it happened under o’malley. Crickets.

Of course no dimocrats were complaining about other states at the time and trying to cleanse their souls about how awful gerrymandering is.

They’d trade 2 seats in Maryland for 30 or more in Ohio, North Carolina and Texas…

Wait to see how the SCOTUS is going to rule. I wouldn’t hold your breath, but the decision should come out before the end of June.

You’re right. Other states have voluntarily made redistricting a bipartisan process. All states should follow this model.

Thanks for posting a thread. Hope the Supreme do the right thing.

My district was already gerrymandered before the new maps were drawn in 2011.

It will remain so, no matter the outcome.

Correct. Districts should be drawn as non partisanly as possible. North Carolina. Ohio. Maryland. All the congressional maps need to be fixed.

Yeah, I think they’re only interested in two districts, not the entire map, including the blood spatter third.

Great information here:

The remaining states – Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Montana, and Washington – all draw both state and federal districts using an independent commission, with regulations limiting direct participation by elected officials. (Alaska and Montana currently have only one congressional representative, and do not need to draw congressional lines.)

Members of these commissions are neither legislators nor public officials. Each state also bans commissioners from running for office in the districts they draw, at least for a few years after the commission finishes its work.

Some of the states further limit commission members’ link to the legislature: Arizona and California, for example, also bar legislative staff from serving on the commission; California, Idaho, and Washington bar lobbyists from serving on the commission as well.

What are your comments regarding the other states where Republican led state legislations have gerrymandered?

Do you think all states should do what 6 states have done (see prior post)

What do you think about Maryland?

Gerrymandering shouldnt be done anywhere.

I think most here agree that we don’t like gerrymandering. What exactly would you like to discuss about it while we wait for the SC to rule on Maryland this summer?

But over in the other thread, you were complaining that no one you consider to be left-wing/libs were calling it out HERE. Now you’re upset the Maryland Dems themselves are entrenched.

The goalposts are moving.

I thought I have been pretty clear. any Gerrymandering is anti-democratic.

And that includes Maryland. What the Democrats did was wrong, and any that are defending it, should be voted out.

Now, how about you on the Republican led states that abused their power regarding gerrymandering ?

Exactly. Gerrymandering of any sort should be terminated ASAP.

Some are calling it out here, finally. My point is that the Democrats in Maryland aren’t going anywhere. There will be nothing done to address Maryland’s gerrymandering. The left can’t stand to see nor allow any seats handed to republicans.

Democrats in Maryland will be forced to change their map when/if the SCOTUS forces them to. Wait until the decision comes before you get upset about what you believe is going to happen. You might be right. You might be completely wrong. We’re going to have to wait to find out. It’ll come in the coming weeks.

It is quite telling that republican states have already taken steps. Short of getting scolded by the Supreme Court. Yet Maryland refuses to even address it because of the democrat entrenchment.

I know exactly how it’s going to end up.

Democratic states, like California, have also taken steps to remove the ability of partisans to draw their own districts. Don’t try to act like only one side is guilty of this practice, or that only one side wants to fix it. We should all come together and demand that partisan gerrymandering become a thing of the past.

Yet the Maryland Democrats are still firmly in power. I thought the only way to change things was to remove those from power who implemented those processes, like O’Malley? They’re so firmly rooted now, I really believe that nothing will change.

No, not finally. Gerrymandering has long been called out here.

Well your gripe is with them, then.

You can’t possibly know that until the SC has ruled.

Well no ■■■■■ Sherlock. In other news, the sun will rise in the east and set in the west and water is wet.

Neither side can’t stand to see nor allow seats handed to the other side Of course they don’t like it. Which is why the courts are involved.
