The recent elections showed us (again) that a single referendum on abortion or marijuana can change voter turn-out enough to change an election.
Dems might eat drink an breathe “hating corporations” or “hating whitey” or “rush rush rush to outlaw gasoline next month,” but they get rejected by mainstream America. . . unless and until they also put abortion or marijuana on the ballot.
IMO that’s putting the cart before the horse. Pro-choice and pro-pot are mainstream positions especially considering how well they do in red states.
Ergo pro-choice pro-pot popular among Dems, Repubs and independents someone voting for either pro-choice or pro-pot is not at all a guarantee to also vote for a certain political party.
Picture it this way.
I run for office on a platform of “close the border.” I lose.
I run for office on a platform of “close the border,” again. I lose, again
And again a third time.
Next, everyone knows who I am. I am the “close the border” guy, but I run on platform promising free nose rings and tattoos to anyone who vapes."
I get elected by a 5% majority. Then I close the border.
Same deal with the Dems, just switch around a few issues.
