A federal judge ruled this week that a local high school student had his First Amendment rights violated when district officials suspended the young man for wearing a pro-Trump t-shirt; demanding they pay the student $25,000 and issue a formal apology.

According to the Oregonian, 18-year old senior Addison Barnes was suspended in January for wearing a shirt that read “Donald J. Trump Border Wall Construction Co.” with the slogan “The Wall Just Got 10 Feet Taller” written across the back.

“A federal judge Tuesday granted a temporary restraining order, barring Hillsboro’s Liberty High School from preventing senior Addison Barnes from wearing his pro-border wall T-shirt to school for the rest of this school year,” wrote the Oregonian earlier this year.

Now the school district is ordered to pay the student $25,000 and issue a formal apology for violating his First Amendment rights.

"I brought this case to stand up for myself and other students who might be afraid to express their right-of-center views,’’ Barnes said in a statement. "Everyone knows that if a student wears an anti-Trump shirt to school, the teachers won’t think twice about it. But when I wore a pro-Trump shirt, I got suspended. That’s not right.’’

In a society with actual free speech, what rights are given to one side must be given to the other.

However, this appears to be more of a dress code matter, as in a need for uniforms, than a free speech matter.

White button down shirts for the boys with trousers, blouses & skirts or trousers for the girls. All the discourse & debate that’s desired can take place, but with minimum standards for dress.

These students are eventually going to graduate & have employers with minimum standards for dress, or uniforms. What time better than the present to prepare?
