President Trump’s diplomatic push to have European nations and others recognize Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s Interim President made major inroads Monday, with America’s allies officially throwing their support behind the opposition leader.

Sixteen European countries -such as the United Kingdom, Spain, Poland, France, and Germany- joined the United States after Nicolas Maduro’s regime failed to reach a deadline for internationally-monitored elections in the face of a mounting economic and political crisis.

“We encourage all countries, including other EU member states, to support the Venezuelan people by recognizing Interim President Guaido and supporting the National Assembly’s efforts to return constitutional democracy to Venezuela,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday afternoon.

Italy formally rebuked their European allies hours after releasing the statement, with Italian officials saying “We absolutely oppose the fact that a country or a group of third countries can determine the internal policies of another country.”
