The trick to any expensive place is a mid 2000s Express Van tall roof and convert it into living space.

Only problem is the lack of a shower. Which can be fixed with a gym membership.

I do not see myself living in a van…and it speaks volumes that is even a viable option.
I am doing well enough to live in Silicon Valley…just not Atherton.

Having seen some apartments in super high density areas and the extreme price of rent… you actually get more living space in the van.

It’s nuts. But it’s becoming more and more common. One girl I saw on YouTube has been living out of an Express van for about six years now. She’s an artist.

She bought the van for about 15,000. Put about ten grand into the conversion. According to her it ended up being way cheaper than buying any kind of home or renting.

I do wonder if one day it becomes prevalent enough that the various levels of government begin to classify them as homes rather than just automobiles. That’s the big downside to them right now.

With a home there comes certain privileges and rights. Even as a renter you get certain rights. You get none of that living in a vehicle. Technically the cops wouldn’t necessarily need a warrant to search it. Since it is a moving vehicle, not a home.

Met a fellow from Chicago one time (on the top of Lookout Mtn) who was telling about how he lived in a nice neighborhood in Chicago. Low crime, nice houses, etc.

Then Obama had them put a housing project amongst them. Deliberately he thought.

Crime shot up and housing values shot straight down.

No new “housing projects” have been built in Chicago for more than 50 years.

Looks like Madden Park Homes, finished in 1970, was the last public housing project built in Chicago. Everything built since then has been privately built.

If anything, Chicago has cleaned out a good part of its public housing, including the infamous Cabrini-Green (Good Times) Projects.
