I’ll be honest, I live in a residential neighborhood of single family homes. Not expensive, very affordable. Most people who have a job and good credit could buy here. There were some houses that were vacant and unkempt and fell into ruin. The town tore them down, someone bought the lots and wanted to build apartments. Our neighborhood voted No! I don’t want apartments on my street. Neither do my neighbors.

Levittown was a community of single family homes, not everyone can handle the responsibilities of maintaining a house. There needs to be multi family buildings in the mix.

There is a lot of holier than thou in your post. You are of course right all those things should be true but that’s not how humans work.

There’s a lot of practicality in my post. Ways to keep places safe and clean.

If a human can’t make that work then they should be denied public housing until they can prove they can act like a human.

And should they be homeless? Do we want children homeless?

I am not saying individuals do not have to be responsible but low cost housing is not a sea of wild kids and parents drinking and taking drugs all day. Yes they have issues and crime and drugs is a problem but these are not just individual issues but societal. Just shifting people into homelessness or slums will not achieve anything.

I do not have an easy answer for this but we have to stop broad brushing those that live in low income housing.

I offered practical solutions to keep low income housing a place where the residents can raise children and live in a safe environment.

I’m not sure why anyone would be against that or why you would consider that broad brushing.

When crime and drugs enter a three story high rise it become an issue for everyone living there. It may be societal but it doesn’t have to be tolerated just because it is low income housing.

If a person can’t act like a human being, they probably aren’t very good parents. Their children would more than likely be better off in foster care.

The trick to any expensive place is a mid 2000s Express Van tall roof and convert it into living space.

Only problem is the lack of a shower. Which can be fixed with a gym membership.

I do not see myself living in a van…and it speaks volumes that is even a viable option.
I am doing well enough to live in Silicon Valley…just not Atherton.

I would do it if I had no other choice.

Having seen some apartments in super high density areas and the extreme price of rent… you actually get more living space in the van.

It’s nuts. But it’s becoming more and more common. One girl I saw on YouTube has been living out of an Express van for about six years now. She’s an artist.

She bought the van for about 15,000. Put about ten grand into the conversion. According to her it ended up being way cheaper than buying any kind of home or renting.

I do wonder if one day it becomes prevalent enough that the various levels of government begin to classify them as homes rather than just automobiles. That’s the big downside to them right now.

With a home there comes certain privileges and rights. Even as a renter you get certain rights. You get none of that living in a vehicle. Technically the cops wouldn’t necessarily need a warrant to search it. Since it is a moving vehicle, not a home.
