I think a parent’s rights end when they affect someone outside their own family though.
Measles is highly contagious, bordering on 90 percent infection if exposed. Pregnant Mothers can and do spontaneously abort if exposed to an infected child and their own unborn child can become infected in the womb, which can be devastating.
Newly born infants are also highly susceptible to measles due to being too young to be immunized, contracting it can be fatal.
So while I am all for parents being in charge of their kids, if someone else’s kid killed your unborn baby because “Supermom” thought Jenny McCarthy was a better medical source that the WHO, I suspect you would not be so philosophic about it.
And these parents are being sued for just this reason, there have been a few cases in the last few years. You are liable for the damage your child causes.

I wonder with some folks whatever happened to “Your rights end where another’s begin.” I didn’t realize willfully endangering or possibly helping to end the life of another was in any state or U S Constitution.
Quite honestly, I sometimes feel that there is a reflexive nature to these debates. If Liberals think something then Conservatives push the alternative, for some things at least.
And vice versa.
No one is talking about taking away parental rights en masse. Some parents are dangerous to their kids, and the kids should be protected. Vaccinations for such a long time has made some folks think that it’s overkill at this point. They have no idea about pertussis, diphtheria. They have no idea what german measles/measles do to a pregnant woman. About how Mumps can sterilize a young boy.
Not everyone is able to be immunized, granted. But those who can be immunized should be immunized to keep the percentage high enough that it keeps these beasts dormant. When the percentage drops too low they rear their heads. Overachieving parents, frightened of autism for the most part, rationalize that their kids don’t need to contribute. They can just piggyback on more responsible parents and kids so they can just skip their contribution to public health.
Until their kid gets sick, and they become a vector which could cause enormous harm to vulnerable people. But hey, at least your kid isn’t going to be autistic. Screw everyone else.

The vaccination rates in Mexico are routinely higher than that of the US, if anything they caught it from one of us.
The CDC recently recommended visitors to Honduras should be vaccinated against a number of infectious diseases, including, mumps, measles, hepatitis, and yellow fever.
