Eastern Band Principal Chief Richard Sneed said in a statement that he “strongly condemn” people who try to pass off distant Native ancestry as their race, but they don’t believe that Warren has appropriated their culture.

"Senator Elizabeth Warren does not claim to be a citizen of any tribal nation, and she is not a citizen of the Eastern Band. Like many other Americans, she has a family story of Cherokee and Delaware ancestry and evidence of Native ancestry.

“Warren has not used her family story or evidence of Native ancestry to gain employment or other advantage. On the contrary, she demonstrates respect for tribal sovereignty.”

“Senator Warren has demonstrated her respect for tribal sovereignty and is an ally of the Eastern Band. As such, we support her and other allies — regardless of party — who promote tribal sovereignty, tribal self-determination, and protection of Cherokee women,” Sneed said.

I communicated with one of them today. I told him that there are many members who are not happy with the way the mods are serving them. The mods see criticism as “contempt of Mods” which I explained is not what this is about. I agree with a crack down on unprovoked, idiotic insults. We don’t need the childish crap here. But the other stuff, they need to let go. We’ll see what if anything changes.

In that time, Warren went from being a law professor at the University of Texas, to the University of Pennsylvania, and finally in 1995 to Harvard University.”

There shouldn’t have to be, really. It is pretty obvious. The school benefited, she benefited.

As far as the blood test, that was a total embarrassment reflecting poor judgement and totally on her.

To what advantage? The PolitiFact article you cite says there’s no evidence of any advantage:

Her detractors say she deployed a faux Native American connection to improve her chances of landing teaching jobs at two of the country’s top law schools. However, there is no proof Warren gained any special advantage in her career.

The article goes on to say that her claim of NA ancestry WAS cited by Harvard Law officials who were scrambling to show diversity among their faculty at the time. But for herself? Again, from the article you cite:

Harvard Law School professor Charles Fried, who served as U.S. Solicitor General under President Ronald Reagan and was part of the committee that put Warren in a tenure position, said in a written statement that her ethnicity never came up during the process.

None of this will matter, of course. Donald will continue using the pejorative “Pocahontas” against Warren, and Donald’s esteemed supporters will continue to accept it as gospel that Warren benefitted “for decades” falsely claiming she was Native American. It’s a fun thing to poke the opposition with, and it gets Donald lots of cheers at his rallies.

I simply find it amusing that they dig in their heels when they’ve been shown time and again it didn’t afford her any proven or demonstrated advantage.

Critics pounced on the news, suggesting Warren had feigned Native American ancestry to enhance her teaching prospects.

The Democratic candidate stumbled early on in reacting to this controversy. At one point, Warren cited remarks that her aunt Bea made about high cheekbones in the family as evidence of her indigenous ancestry. She said she listed herself as a minority in the professional listings merely to connect with “people like me,” noting that it was “not a particularly good use for the directory, because it never happened.”

The American Association of Law Schools directory doesn’t specify which professors are Native American, but instead clumps all the “minority law teachers” together in a distinct section. As such, it’s no surprise that Warren didn’t connect with American Indians through the listing — they wouldn’t have known she was one of them.

Warren first listed herself as a minority in the Association of American Law Schools Directory of Faculty in 1986, the year before she joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She continued to list herself as a minority until 1995, the year she accepted a tenured position at Harvard Law School.
