Beneath the surface something more sinister is going on.
Look at how the remedies in the court cases are being framed.
In Pennsylvania it’s either “Give the Trump campaign the 1.5 million ballots or a representative sample thereof, and the Trump campaign will tell you how many of those 1.5 million ballots are illegal and what the actual result of the PA election is” (not kidding- this is how Rudy’s case has been framed up) or “the election is too screwed up to be certified- throw the selection of electors to the GOP Legislature”. In Georgia it’s “the Legislature’s power was usurped when the Secretary of State entered into that agreement to make it so both parties had to sign off on the validity of a ballot signature instead of the one it used to be” (no kidding- their argument was that making elections safer and fairer was against the law!)
In Michigan the Wayne County deadlock was a trial balloon to see if certification of Michigan’s votes could be avoided, and again the elector selection bumped to the GOP Legislature there.
The Chairwoman of the Arizona GOP also said that of her state. Radio pundits said it.
Now- with so many states having to flip (three of WI, AZ, MI, PA and GA have to flip or Biden still wins), and with Trump and his legal team being a bunch of buffoons, the odds of it succeeding this time are practically nil. But they are seriously trying hard. They are testing the safeguards and seeing where they can be blown away.
But with a core group of the GOP primed to believe in conspiracies like this, and a competent group of Trumpists at the helm, and a closer race next time? What I outlined could easily happen.
Even now, all it takes is ONE court of “strict constructionalists” to take their legal arguments seriously and we could be down the road to this happening
Our institutions don’t hold unless honorable people who believe in those institutions exist. They are extremely fragile- even the Founders knew this.
The people running the GOP right now are NOT honorable. Neither are the Dems, but they are paying at least a modicum of fealty to the old institutions and norms. That too could change.
The Republic is in danger if people keep believing in Narratives instead of looking for themselves.
