Santa Barbara, California has become the first city in the United States to impose a possible jail sentence for those defying the municipality’s plastic straw ban; giving the green light to fine and imprison repeated offenders.
“According to the ordinance, violators on their first offense will be given a written warning notice. But the second time a purveyor of plastic straws defies the ban is when the heavy hand of the law could clamp down,” writes Fox News.
The new code could place a $1,000 fine on first offenders and up to six months in prison for those who refuse to comply with the ordinance.
In contrast, Seattle -the first American city to implement such a policy- only fines businesses $250 per offense.
The strict policy comes as Starbucks -one of the nation’s largest coffee chains- unveiled its plan to phase-out the plastic straws from all of its locations over the next two years citing environmental concerns.
