We live in a world where Monty Python comedy routines predicted stuff actually going on now. Where Yes, Minister ./ Yes, Prime Minister still speaks volumes. But where Allo, Allo and Von Clump’s Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies is passé.
The problem of course being is that there are always enough of these nutters on the Left to allow the New Right to claim that they have to get more extreme themselves to fight this Culture War To Save The Republic.
Hence Reaction will continue to be the order of the day while the real issues go unaddressed.
Yes…progressives always underestimate the strength of the backlash to change…conservatives always underestimate the amount of support they have to resist the change.
A negative feedback loop that will reinforce itself unless some other common enemy pops up to short circuit it.
I am going back in history, though, to see if there was a similar time in our history where the right wing has decided to eagerly throw away their traditional resistance to using legislation to foster cultural aims and allied the power of government to populism.
Essentially expressing a willingness to do that which the most ardent leftists only dreamed of doing but never actually did to the degree the right feared…but now they might.
I’d argue it’s not that progressives underestimate the backlash… it’s that they simply don’t care. The hallmark of progressives is pushing ideas through the backlash. There hasn’t been a single major social change, pushed by progressives, that wasn’t met with backlash. Civil War was a backlash, Compromise of 1877 was a backlash. Jim Crow was a backlash, war on drugs was a backlash, banning gay marriage was a backlash, banning crt is a backlash.
