Klobuchar, Warren, Sanders - Conflict of Interest - Recuse

don’t klobuchar, warren, and crazy bernie all have a conflict of interest?

shouldn’t they have to recuse themselves?

doesn’t this impeachment stuff gives them a chance to vote out their competitor? voting out trump helps all democrat candidates

Well if it is wrong to ask for an investigation of a possible political opponent because that is implicitly for personal political gain, then how can it not be wrong to vote to convict a likely political opponent? Shouldn’t that also be considered to be for personal political gain and therefore an abuse of office?

Umm. If Trump were to be removed there is nothing that stops him from running for the presidency this year or winning it.

So…if Ukraine had announced an investigation of Biden, then since Biden could still run for President, it could not have been for personal political gain to ask for an investigation.

Yes, truly the founding fathers never considered the possibility.

Well, that really depends. There certainly could be.

Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States; but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

The only fair way is to call the whole thing off.

As for the “conflict of interest” involved - of course there is “conflict of interest”. This was well-understood by the Founders.

Congress is a political branch, and always has been. If every Senator with a political conflict of interest had to recuse, then the Chief Justice would be “presiding” over an empty room.

You forgot michael bennett.

Surely the honourable thing to do would be for Trump to admit guilt and submit his immediate resignation?

Even if he admitted the “guilt” of wanting an investigation and holding back funds, that still is a policy dispute, not an impeachable act.

The President, Senators, and Representatives are all equally political and all are elected.
There is nothing in the Constitution saying Congresspersons can make decisions based on personal political interest but Presidents can’t.

Which has nothing to do with a conflict of interest.

That is true, but since the GOP holds the senate they COULD remove him but not ban him from future office.

Of course neither will happen, but in the context of this OP it was simply an answer.

Public funds for personal profit.

Nope they don’t.

but they didn’t, they opened criminal investigation into Ruby source though.

The Senate can stop him.

Today, the Chief Justice would have to recuse.
