Well it’s not just Clarence Thomas whose living large. And these libs argue that it’s so tough to make it in America.
Cool. Maybe now we can agree to tighten up the ethics and make them mandatory?
Just reinforces my original opinion when the story on Thomas broke.
Yes. This is wrong on so many levels. It’s because we as a nation have decided that the Supreme Court doesn’t have to live to basic government/taxpayer ethics. Shameful.
Although I think the situation with Sotomayor is vastly different than Thomas…I concur there should be ethics rules that prohibit the ability to profit from being a current SCOTUS.
From the article:
The belief that they should not be held accountable or even disclose lavish gifts from wealthy benefactors is an affront to the nation they were chosen to serve. To hold these nine Justices to the same standard as every other federal judge is not a radical or partisan notion.”
“Since the Court won’t act, Congress will,” the Democratic senator added.
As of this morning, their bill has 22 co-sponsors — but literally zero support from Senate Republicans.
We as a nation decided no such thing, they decided it for themselves long ago.
Yeah, hers is more like Newt Gingrich, only worse
No difference.
We allow it to continue.
how do you stop it when the SCOTUS is the final arbiter?
They aren’t. It’s well established precedent that Congress can set ethical guidelines for federal judges.
If they set ethical guidelines for SCOTUS justices, how would SCOTUS overturn it?
You actually think that the courts would not throw it out? Maybe they wouldn’t, but they would decide how it works and there is nothing short of impeachment Congress can do about it.
Co-equal branches of government and separation of powers. Roberts already said so.
Consider it reparations. Sotomayor is owed due to systemic racism causing poverty.
Isn’t it a shame that we need laws? The bigger shame is that they’re needed because of the asses amongst us. It’s even a bigger shame, when they need to be written to reel in a SCOTUS Judge. The fact is though, there are no laws written that apply to this, regarding the Supreme court. Other government agencies…yes but in this case, no law is broken.
Should a SCOTUS Judge apply this to their own code of conduct and ethics? You’d have thought so but here’s what I’ve found historically. All of us where a mask in life that hides what we don’t want seen and allows others to see what we want them to see. Then…life throws something at an individual where the mask comes off and you see who they really are. Don’t ever forget what you saw. It doesn’t change…or RARELY does. You’re seeing this person, with their mask off. It’s the real them.

if the dems ever got 67 solid votes in the senate, the cons would be impeached and removed. thomas the first to go.

If Trump wins in 2024 and Republicans take the Senate, Republicans will be screaming for Thomas’retirement.
That’s probably true, he won’t though. Not for another 7 years.
Hell, I hope she gets some first class vacations out of it. Paid for by people that will have future business before the court. If you’re cool with it then so am I.

I fully expect Thomas to die before retirement.
Thomas is in excellent health.
