Probably a good thing that the PLAN is still about 3 to 5 years from having sufficient amphibious capacity to mount a full scale invasion of Taiwan. The United States Navy is extremely impotent in the Pacific Theater right now and if I was President Xi and had sufficient amphibious capacity, I would certainly consider now as the time to strike.
While China is having its own disease difficulties, the United States is shut down and a number of military units are effectively incapacitated.
Taiwan is in China’s backyard.
It is certainly fortunate that the PLAN still is somewhat short of the necessary amphibious capability needed to support a full scale invasion.
In the long run, it is not looking good for Taiwan. The United States Navy is looking like it will make no progress at all in augmenting certain capabilities and it is quite likely the overall Ship Battle Force number could shrink going forward.
At the same time, the PLAN’s shipbuilding prowess, already quite impressive, is only getting better and the PLAN is pumping out new ships, many that now are close to or equivalent to their United States Navy counterparts.
It is only a matter of time for Taiwan. Those who can leave, should consider getting the **** out.
If the United States just butts out and lets things go as they will, this will happen with relatively little risk for escalation. If the United States decides to play hero, than things obviously could progress very rapidly.
It goes back to the creation of the military structure in the late 1940’s during the Civil War. The Communist Party named its force the People’s Liberation Army and when the Communists won the Civil War in 1949, the name stuck. The Communists had minimal air power and no Navy beyond a few riverine boats.
As the Air Branch developed and the Navy developed, they were spun out into their own branches of the People’s Liberation Army and the actual Army itself became the PLA Ground Force.
It is rather confusing, because People’s Liberation Army refers to the entire Chinese Military Establishment.
