When I lived on Long Island I helped the local Chinese from a Chinese as a second language program. Their kids spoke perfect Enlgihs and childlike Chinese and could not speak to their own granparents. The kids will always be Chinese, but yeah, they had assimilated a lot.
Same deal with the two Haitian kids I coached in LL Baseball.
Same deal when I worked in Florida and many of my coworkers were Haitian.
Their kids spoke mostly English and couldn’t carry a grown-up conversation with their own grandparents.
I have been told that is not the same with every culture and language, but that’s my experience.
